Lake Kariba is a birding destination for birding enthusiasts and avid birdwatchers. The area has more than 240 bird species recorded and is particularly rich in waders and other water-associated birds. The dead mopane trees on the lakeshore are covered by large numbers of perched birds, including cormorants, darters and many fish eagles – their cries regularly filling the air.
Lake Kariba is well known for its fishing and especially sport-fishing! This vast expanse of fresh water is home to some fantastic species of fish including the Tiger fish, Bream, Tilapia, Catfish, Barbel, Labeo, Jack and the mighty Vundu, that commonly attains the size of a fully grown man.
There are game reserves in the area which have large concentration of wild lions. Other wildlife includes white rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, leopard, hyaena, cheetah, and over 240 species of birdlife. Hippopotamus and the Nile crocodile are frequently seen and if you are lucky, a variety of small mammals can be spotted.
